I actually watched most of it, Bernie (it was this morning - our time) I watched it for the occasion, rather than the game. Went off to have a shower with 7 minutes to go in extra time, thinking that I would be back in time to see the penalty shoot out. Of course Spain scored at this time.

Saw bits of the game while getting ready for work. Even though i tipped the Dutch, i have to admit on what i saw that Spain deserved the win.

It was on at about 2am Perth time. I watched the Formula 1 Grand Prix and then dozed off during Le Tour well before midnight. No prospect of staying up that late.

I was just surprised there was no comment at all here about such a huge game.

just before Iniesta received the ball that he put in the back of the net the first attempt to pass to him was desperately blocked by a defender. At the time THAT ball was played Iniesta looked to be in an offside position; since the blocked ball fell back to the attacker who then put the ball that eventually ended up in the back in the net, and another defender had retired sufficiently to play Iniesta onside for the second pass - should a free kick have been awarded for offside on the basis of the first ball played? The defence was scrambling to defend (funny that); the time between the first ball and the second ball was maybe a second; certainly not five. thoughts?

I agree that he was offside to start, Serge, and that maybe the Ref's assistant should have picked it up. Also, that it should have been a corner not a goal kick up the other end not long before.

Shit happens though, Spain won, Dutchies can cry - which they certainly did to the ref.

The coverage we had showed that he probably wasn't offside for that initial pass.

any replays available of the whole play PLS? Iniesta certainly wasn't offside with the ball he put in the back of the net that's for sure - but my first thoughts were that he was initially. Need another look or three that's all.

(btw - that Iniesta can certainly dive)

I was watching on the BBC, doubt you can see it over there though for legal reasons. they had a superimposed line.

I saw a superimposed line for the second ball - there was no mistake there. not so lucky with the first ball though and no mention of any consideration of offside from our commentary team.

that's poor analysis. both the first attempted pass and the second, successful pass were analysed over here and he was level for the first one, so not offside.
