I always look forward to the Charity Shield game - seems like the start for me.

Perth game should be a beauty jucd. Very fast and open - and lots of new faces.

The Sharks will field eight of their new recruits in their first trial of the season against Manly at Toyota Stadium this Friday night. The Sharks side is: 1 Nathan Stapleton, 2 Luke Covell, 3 Ben Pomeroy, 4 Dean Collis, 5 Isaac Gordon, 6 Trent Barrett, 7 John Morris, 8 Kade Snowden, 9 Stuart Flanagan, 10 Luke Douglas, 11 Reece Williams, 12 Grant Millington, 13 Jayson Bukuya.
Substitutes: Nathan Gardner, Albert Kelly, Matthew Wright, Stewart Mills, Josh Cordoba, Lancen Juodo, Siosaia Vave, Adam Cuthbertson.

South Sydney opened the NRL pre-season with a 42-12 win over Manly at Redfern. Admittedly the Seagles were playing their U/13s, but a good first up by the Bunnies ... 8)

Raiders Trial Squad vs Western Suburbs
Monday, 8 February 2010
The CFMEU Canberra Raiders will use their opening trial of 2010 to test the depth of their playing roster, when they take on the Western Suburbs Magpies at West Belconnen Oval this Saturday evening. Raiders Coach David Furner has named a relatively inexperienced squad for the Green Machine’s opening hit out, opting to save his more experienced campaigners for the Raiders first Official NRL Trial against the Broncos on 20 February 2010.

Former NRL Players Reece Robinson and Brett Kelly will be a couple of players out to make an impression for inclusion in the following week’s trial and so to will Toyota Cup graduates Mick Picker, Matt Ward and Jarrad Kennedy who will see how a pre-season with the Top Squad has improved their games.

After naming his squad today Furner said it was not only important to give all of his young troops a chance on the weekend but to also see first hand a handful of fringe players from Souths Logan, New Zealand and the Local League.

“This trial will be used to have a look at some of the emerging players under our watch, in particular the 3 guys we have coming down from Logan. My reports are that they are all training very well and this is a reward for their efforts” Furner said.

The match will be played over three periods of 25 minutes and kicks off at 6pm.

TRIAL SQUAD IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Mark Appleton
Lewis Balcomb (Souths Logan)
Kevin Curtis (NZ)
Phil Dennis (Souths Logan)
Andrew Edwards
Matt James (CDJRL)
Brett Kelly
Mitch Kennedy
Jarrad Kennedy
Cy Lasscock
Wade Liddell (Souths Logan)
Blaise Lomax
Drury Low
Sam Mataora
Matt McIlwrick
Chris Medcalf
Mark Nicholls
Mick Picker
Reece Robinson
Karl Silvano
James Smart
James Stuart
Iopu Togia Foua
Matt Ward
Josh White
Sam Williams

Melbourne have named an understrength team for their first NRL pre-season trial match against Brisbane Broncos in Rockhampton. Only nine players, including premiership-winning prop Ryan Tandy and former New South Wales Origin winger Anthony Quinn, have NRL first grade experience in the 21-man squad to take on the Broncs. The Broncs have named former Parramatta Eels halfback Tim Smith to make his debut for their team.

I'm outraged at the crass opportunism that the NRL is displaying by taking a game of league into the home of Rugby in Brisbane

[of course I know the tahs are taking on the reds at Lang Park the spiritual home of RL in Brisbane and that's all part of a plot by <insert code of choice> to destablise league]

Who knows - the "reds" may be able to buy a "marquee " player to boost crowd numbers and win a few games ...
