Proposed new redevelopment of the WACA ground:

Old northern stands to be demolished and replaced with new grandstand.
Overall capacity up to 30,000 (from about 24,000)
2 x 17 storey resdential blocks
2 x office buildings
retail and entertainment complex.
big upgrade in terms of corporate facilities.

Will be a JV betweeen the WACA and a property developer.

The whole complex is supposed to give more long term revenue from rentals of non-cricket related buildings, plus an increased capacity in terms of ticket sales.

Needs state govt approval for zoning and all that.

Overall, sounds good. I'd love to have an appartment 15 lecels up on one of the residential buildings :)

No idea Serge, but if I can afford one 3 years from now I'll fly you over on my Learjest to be my guest for the weekend :)

It's different and if the extra revenue get the WACA's playing surface back to its best and players and spectator facilities up to scratch with those in the east it can only be good. I would like to have seen the other proposals the WACA looked at before before they settled on this one up. Not sure if in the long term its good for the WACA for example recently Newcastle's CBD had been redeveloped with lots of new residential buildings and since these people have moved in their has been increased pressure on existing institutions in the CBD, too much noise etc etc. despite everyone knowing what the deal is before it doesn't mean they wont try annoyingly so to limit number of D?N games, noise, etc etc... Be careful or it will bite them

Best part is they appear to be planning to keep the old manual scoreboard!

WACA redevelopment might be on hold.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/20 ... 931016.htm

The government task force is recommending that the state government build one multi-purpose stadium with movable seating to accomodate all major sports in WA - AFL (Dockers, West Coast) Rugby (Western Force) Soccer (Perth Glory) and International cricket (1 test and 2 ODI). Under the plan the WACA would be sold to the highest bidder and the money used toward construction of the new stadium.

Interesting concept but multipurpose configuration haven't been successful around the world probably the most successful is Candlestick park in US but I believe it has problems and is or has recently been replaced?

Best in Australia is Telsra stadium but has failed at Telstra Dome if the technology is good enough go for it but if not maybe another option is best.

seems to me that AFL has seen government money floating around over their for a new stadium and dont want the cricket or rugby/soccer mob to get it and they miss out it would be ashame if they get just another Subiaco

Seems to me like they are trying to make a one size fits all 60,000 seat stadium.

It would suit AFL first and foremost because they'd use it most often, the other sports would have to work in around them.

The WACA redevelopment has got the go-ahead. Residential and commercial buildings to go up around the perimeter of the ground.

Edit: found some pitchers: http://www.perthnow.com.au/gallery-e6fr ... 920?page=1

Thinking about it further, I'm not sure I'd want to live there after all. Unless you are a real cricket tragic there would be major hassles anytime there is a game on with a reasonable size crowd.

Seems like they a creating a great home for WACA agree wouldn't want to live there for the hassels on game day that said 18,000 capacity maybe not so many hassles. I assume the international games will be moved to the redeveloped Subiaco with that capacity being a little small for the big events especially in 3rd city.

I'm not sure about that. I don't know what the final plan (if any) is for redeveloping Subi. If it is a knock down and brand new stadium then maybe, if it is a rebuild around the current Subi ground then no, the orientation is wrong - east west. Cricket fields needs to be north south - otherwise the batsmen stare into the sun.
